an exploration of machine knitting
This piece is an exploration of letterforms and patterning through the process of machine knitting. The exploration aimed to turn knitting, something often disregarded in art, into a contemporary art form. Instead of using the machine commercially or domestically, like it would traditionally be used, I created something solely aesthetic based.
This piece consists of nearly 200 separate knitted rectangles, which were then hand stitched together. The message in the piece reflects my feelings towards knitting machines, after the difficult process of teaching myself how to use a second-hand domestic knitting machine from the 80's with nothing but the original manual to guide me.
